A note on prior technical difficulties with Membership ApplicationsPrevious technical hitches with both our email server and fax number, due to large file sizes, caused some voice messages regarding membership applications to go astray. Thus unfortunately some membership applications which were submitted have not been processed. As a consequence, ATMA's inaugural AGM meeting held on Friday 27 November 2009 was changed by vote of the members present to a Special General Meeting. At this meeting a new interim board was elected and steps were taken to address the difficulties with the membership application process. An inaugural AGM will be held late in 2010. We ask, if you have not yet received confirmation of your membership application, that you contact ATMA again to arrange to resend your application. Gita International Yoga has kindly volunteered to take over all administration of ATMA, including processing of membership applications. ATMA can be contacted c/o Gita International Yoga via the details set out on the Contact Us page. If you wish to reapply, or have not yet applied for membership, please read on to find out how to apply for membership.
Joining ATMAATMA membership comes under three categories, recognising that meditation is taught in a range of contexts and for different purposes. Therapeutic: used therapeutically within the healthcare setting by a qualified healthcare practitioner Personal development: for enhanced performance, general wellbeing and self-care Spiritual: meditation within a spiritual and/or religious context Criteria for membership are outlined on the relevant form, which can be downloaded from the ATMA website. In broad terms, membership in one or other category is granted on the basis of the teacher’s qualifications, meditation training and experience. A grandfather clause is also available for those of long-standing, suitable and reputable experience in meditation instruction. Current ATMA membership is designed to recognize the training and expertise of individuals. In the future it is intended to extend membership to organisations that train meditation teachers and teach meditation to the public. By providing membership for teachers who ascribe to high professional and ethical standards, ATMA aspires to enable confidence for a general public seeking reliable meditation teachers. Membership of ATMA entitles meditation teachers to a range of benefits, including: Recognition as a qualified teacher of meditation; Networking opportunities with other meditation teachers and organisations; Representation to media, regulatory and government bodies on matters pertinent to meditation teachers; Regular newsletters and information; A database of accredited meditation practitioners and, eventually, organisations; Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities; Voting rights and the right to run for office on the ATMA Board.
